In my talk, I will explore the ways in which the life course perspective, which connects micro, meso, and macro levels of analysis, advances the understandings of (a) variations in intergenerational family relations across time and place, and (b) impacts of intergenerational family ties on individual lives. I will follow five distinct life course principles for analysing interdependencies in intergenerational family relations: (a) timing of lives, (b) lives in context, (c) past shaping the present and future, (d) linked lives, and (e) agency. I will describe each of these principles, paying attention to underlying theoretical mechanisms. Selected examples of empirical applications will be provided. Where relevant, gender differences will be highlighted. By taking interdependencies as a cross-cutting theme, I hope to provide rigour in research on intergenerational relations from a life course perspective.
